Volunteer Spotlight: Thom

Volunteer Thom recently became an Angel City Triple Threat: What started as some innocent volunteering turned into running the LA Marathon with Team ACPB--and now he's fostering puppies! We caught up with Thom about his experiences volunteering with ACPB.

How did you first get involved with ACPB?

I'd been volunteering with dogs for a few years and had seen ACPB at Strut Your Mutt and a few other events. There was always a strong volunteer presence and a bunch of really cute dogs. It was pretty inspiring, and something I definitely wanted to be a part of.

What made you decide to join Team ACPB?

I'd come along to one of the pack hikes and was chatting to some of the volunteers and team members. They were just getting ready for the 2017 marathon, and their enthusiasm and passion for the cause was infectious. Next thing I know I'm signing myself up.

What's your favorite part of being on the team?

Carb loading. I'm probably doing it wrong, but I've definitely been using distance running as an excuse to eat terribly. Really though, the best thing has been the support. This has been one of the best experiences of my life and the endless support from my teammates throughout all the challenges has been incredible. I signed up for 2019 as soon as I was able to.

What was the experience of fundraising like for you?

It's always super awkward asking people for money, but I was pretty blown away with the donations I received. It was amazing to see people from all parts of my life believing in the cause and wanting to support us.

How did you get started fostering?

I just got chatting with some other volunteers. We have 3 little terriers of our own, so we're only really able to foster puppies from ACPB as the size is more comparable.

What's been the best part of fostering? The most challenging?

Fostering puppies is a double edged sword. They need endless amounts of stimulation, the amount of poop and pee to clean up is often insurmountable, but oh man do they make up for it with cuteness.

What would you say to someone who's on the fence about fostering?

Just get in touch with the organization and get the conversation started. You're not signing your life away - the foster program is super accommodating, and can often work around your schedule and limitations.

What has been your most memorable ACPB moment?

I have to say finishing the LA marathon. While the race itself was a huge accomplishment for me, celebrating at the after party with all the other dedicated team members and volunteers was especially moving.

Thank you, Thom, for everything you do! Ready to get started on your own volunteering journey? Sign up to volunteer, foster, or run with us!
